01 Privacy Policy

This privacy policy applies to the Wayword app for iPhone, published by Wandering Jetstream LLC ("we," "us"), which is the data controller for the purposes of the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation. You can reach us about anything in this policy at [email protected].

Wayword is a spaced-repetition flashcard app for learning vocabulary. It is not a game, and it has no accounts, no sign-in, and no social features.

What Wayword collects: nothing

Wayword itself makes no network requests of any kind. It has no server, no account system, and no analytics. We do not collect your name, your email address, or any other personal information, and we could not do so if we wanted to.

Your learning data stays on your device. Wayword has no account system and does not transmit your vocabulary, your progress, or your review history — these are stored locally, and deleting the app removes them.

The data Wayword stores on your device, and only on your device, is:

• your decks and the cards in them, including any vocabulary you import yourself;
• your review history and spaced-repetition schedule for each card;
• your progress counts and streaks;
• your settings, including the language you are studying, appearance and audio preferences, and which sections of the About screen you have expanded;
• your Wayword Pro purchase status.

None of this is backed up to us, shared with us, or visible to us. It is included in your own iPhone or iCloud device backup only if you have that turned on in iOS, which is a setting between you and Apple.

The only third party: Google AdMob

The single third-party data flow in Wayword is Google's Mobile Ads SDK and Google's User Messaging Platform SDK, which serve and manage advertising in the free version. There are no other SDKs, trackers, analytics services, or network calls in the app.

The free version shows ads through Google AdMob. Wayword is configured for non-personalized ads only: ads are not targeted using a cross-app advertising identifier, and the app does not ask to track you. To serve and measure these ads, Google may process limited technical data, such as a coarse (non-precise) location derived from your IP address and general device information. Purchasing Wayword Pro removes ads entirely. See Google's Privacy Policy for details on its ad services.

Specifically, when an ad is requested, Google receives and processes:

• your IP address, and the coarse (non-precise) location Google infers from it — Google does not receive precise or GPS location from Wayword;
• device and app information, such as device model, operating system version, and app version;
• a device identifier used for frequency capping, fraud prevention, and aggregate measurement. Wayword never asks for tracking permission, so the Apple Advertising Identifier (IDFA) is unavailable to the app and to Google; it reads as all zeros.
• ad interaction data, such as which ads were shown, whether an ad was viewed, and whether it was tapped;
• crash, performance, and other diagnostic data from the ad SDK itself, such as SDK errors, latency, and ad-load failures.

Google acts as an independent controller for this processing. You can read more in Google's Privacy Policy, How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services, and Google's disclosure of the data AdMob collects.

Tracking: none, and no ATT prompt

Those ads are non-personalized. Wayword does not use the Advertising Identifier and does not track you across other apps or websites.

Because Wayword does not track you in the sense Apple defines, it never presents Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. Wayword never asks for tracking permission, so the Apple Advertising Identifier (IDFA) is unavailable to the app and to Google; it reads as all zeros. Ad personalization is disabled at the SDK level, and there is no account or user ID for any data to be linked to; no tracking occurs.

If you are in the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland, Wayword shows Google's consent message before any ad-related processing begins. Your choice is stored on your device, and you can change or withdraw it at any time: open Settings → Privacy Settings inside Wayword to reopen the consent form. That option appears only where consent is legally required.

Do not sell or share

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA. We have never done so. Because Wayword serves non-personalized ads only and does not use the Advertising Identifier, there is no cross-context behavioral advertising to opt out of, and no "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" mechanism is required. Buying Wayword Pro removes ad serving from the app altogether.

Wayword Pro and in-app purchases

Wayword is free to use, with the full core word list in every language. The free version is supported by non-personalized ads.

Wayword Pro is a one-time purchase that removes ads, unlocks multiple custom decks, and lets you import your own vocabulary — no subscription, no expiry.

Wayword Pro removes all ads: the ad SDK is never started and no ad requests are made.

Purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. We never receive or store your payment details, your Apple Account email, or your name. Apple processes the purchase. Wayword checks it on your device, and we receive no payment details or purchase history about you. Apple's handling of your information is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

Children

Wayword is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, email [email protected] and we will delete it.

Your rights

If you are in the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, the right to data portability, the right to withdraw consent at any time, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. California residents have equivalent rights to know, delete, correct, and to opt out of sale or sharing under the CCPA as amended, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising them.

Because Wayword holds no personal data about you on any system we control, the fastest way to exercise deletion is to delete the app, which removes all of your learning data from your device. For anything that concerns Google's ad processing, you can withdraw consent in Settings → Privacy Settings, or contact Google directly using the links above.

This website

This website is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, uses no local storage, and runs no analytics or tracking scripts of its own. It has no forms and collects nothing from you.

The site is hosted on GitHub Pages and served through Cloudflare. As part of delivering the page to you, both GitHub, Inc. and Cloudflare, Inc. receive and log your IP address, the page you requested, and your browser's user-agent string, and Cloudflare runs an automated bot-detection script for security. Neither we nor they use this for advertising, and we do not have access to raw server logs. See GitHub's Privacy Statement and Cloudflare's Privacy Policy. Email to our support address is routed by Cloudflare Email Routing.

Where the word lists come from

The core word lists are built from real language. Source texts are drawn from Project Gutenberg (via the Gutendex API) and the Leipzig Corpora Collection — both open, well-documented, and licensed for redistribution including commercial use.

Leipzig Corpora Collection data is used under the Creative Commons Attribution licence (CC BY). We gratefully acknowledge Universität Leipzig, the Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig, and InfAI as the source of corpus data used in building these word lists.

No corpus text is included in the app — only frequency-ranked headwords and our own editorial enrichment.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update this page and revise the "last updated" date above. If a change materially affects how your information is handled, we will say so in the app's release notes for the version that introduces it.

Governing law

This policy and any dispute arising from it are governed by the laws of the District of Columbia, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Nothing in this section removes any right you have under the mandatory consumer-protection or data-protection law of your own country of residence.

02 Terms of Use

These terms apply to the Wayword app for iPhone, published by Wandering Jetstream LLC. By downloading or using Wayword you agree to them. They sit alongside Apple's standard End User License Agreement for licensed applications, which also applies.

Licence

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Wayword on Apple devices you own or control, for your own learning. You may not copy, redistribute, sell, rent, sublicense, reverse-engineer, or extract the app's word lists, audio, or other content for use outside the app, except where that restriction is prohibited by law.

Acceptable use

Do not use Wayword unlawfully, and do not attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or circumvent any part of the app, including its purchase and ad-consent mechanisms.

Content you import

Wayword Pro lets you import your own vocabulary. You are responsible for what you import: you must have the right to use it, and it must not infringe anyone else's rights or break any law. Imported content stays on your device — we never receive it, never review it, and cannot recover it for you if it is lost or if you delete the app.

No warranty on educational content

Wayword's translations, phonetic transcriptions, part-of-speech and gender labels, CEFR levels, and audio are provided for language-learning purposes and are offered "as is." Language is ambiguous and regionally variable, and we make no warranty that any entry is accurate, complete, or suitable for professional, academic, legal, medical, or safety-critical use. Do not rely on Wayword for translation where accuracy matters. If you find an error, please tell us — see Support below.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Wandering Jetstream LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost data, lost profits, or loss of goodwill, arising out of your use of Wayword. Our total liability for any claim relating to Wayword is limited to the amount you paid us for it, which for the free version is zero. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations, in which case they apply only to the extent permitted, and nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury, or fraud.

Intellectual property

Wayword, its design, its code, its audio, and its curated word lists are owned by Wandering Jetstream LLC, except for third-party material used under licence: corpus data from the Leipzig Corpora Collection under CC BY, public-domain source texts from Project Gutenberg, and Google's Mobile Ads and User Messaging Platform SDKs under Google's terms. "Wayword" and "Wandering Jetstream" are our marks. All rights not expressly granted are reserved.

Changes and termination

We may update these terms; the "last updated" date above will change, and continued use after that constitutes acceptance. This licence ends automatically if you breach these terms or delete the app.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the District of Columbia, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and nothing here removes any mandatory right you have under the consumer-protection law of your own country of residence.

Apple

Apple is not a party to these terms and has no obligation to provide support for Wayword. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
